The last thing you want to see on your Gram Stain of sterile fluids is dead bacteria! Not from your specimen, but from your culture medium broth:

Did you know that all powdered culture media contains bacteria that, although killed during the sterilization process, may show up as dead bacteria on your Gram stain?

This is a possible cause of false positive reports. Hardy Diagnostics solves this problem by filtering its Thioglycollate before sterilization, leaving the medium clear, clean, and free from dead bacteria! Avoid false positives, and insist that your Thioglycollate be filtered.
